In each Summer Workshop, teachers will perform activities that cover the course material for the featured topic as if they were the students exploring and becoming familiar with these concepts firsthand. Specifically, we will focus on ways to help students experience the concepts using inquiry methods that integrate the information in each unit with information in other parts of the course curriculum. Teachers will be trained to use the best practices and big ideas necessary to meet the requirements of the College Board AP Biology redesign that will be implemented in fall of 2012 and in the requirements necessary for IB Biology. IB, AP and General course teachers are all welcome as we will cover the required content and skills for International Baccalaureate® and Advanced Placement® courses. If you are looking for student-centered activities, case studies, games and other techniques that can be used to identify and dispel misconceptions and increase student involvement and critical thinking, this is the workshop for you.

Pricing and Schedule
Each 5-day workshop takes place from 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday and costs $490 for the week. This price includes tuition, materials, snacks and beverages, 40 hours of Continuing Education Credits and one complete unit of lesson plans from either the AP* Biology Daily Lesson Plans, AP* Environmental Science Daily Lesson Plans or the Experimental Biology Daily Lesson Plans curriculum, depending on the topic being studied that week (Ecology, Genetics, Cell Biology or Anat&Physio).
Each day will be spent performing student-centered, critical-thinking exercises such as model building, simulations, dry and wet labs, case studies and Socratic discussions. Teachers will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and seek solutions to problems and concerns they have in their own course. There will be an emphasis on solidifying teacher comprehension and gaining a deeper understanding of the subject material as a whole while relating specific concepts to other topics in other parts of the course.
It is recommended that you bring a laptop capable of wireless Internet access (or let me know if you’d like for me to arrange a computer rental) and your course textbook.
Summer Workshops will be held at the Four Points Sheraton at 22 Woodfin Street in downtown Asheville. Rooms can be booked for $44.50 per night for double occupancy or $89.00 for single occupancy. Please call 828-253-1851 and request a room at the special rate given for Catalyst Learning Curricula.
Free passes for the YMCA located next door to the hotel will be available to all guests staying at the Four Points Sheraton. Hiking, biking and running trails surround the city and I welcome workshop participants to join me on a morning run or walk before the start of each day’s workshop. There will be enough daylight after the workshops to enjoy the mountains if you want to catch a sunset at a lookout on the Blue Ridge Parkway, visit the Folk Art Center, or bring an evening picnic to a concert at the Brevard Music Center. Right outside the hotel, the streets of downtown Asheville offer live music, dancing, street performers, gallery walks and numerous other opportunities to take in the culture of this area.
