NGSS Activities for Teaching Cell Biology
June 29 - July 3$550
This workshop is ideal for general level, AP, or IB Biology teachers who would like to use more student-centered teaching in their course. We will cover all topics required to teach the entire unit of cell biology with methods that allow you to drop the lecture, worksheets, and PowerPoints in exchange for active teaching. Drawing on Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and practices you will experience the arc of learning by playing the role of the student as we move through the content and skills in a 100% hands-on manner. Throughout the week I will use example lessons that lead you through constructing models, designing investigations, playing games, defending claims, creating graphic representations, developing simulations, and analyzing data with content from AP and IB Biology. You can determine for yourself the amount of direct instruction you crave to balance alternate approaches to learning. Although high achievers who thrive in a traditional classroom are uniquely challenged by student-centered instruction, this course is ideally suited for teachers with atypical learners and those with gaps in their knowledge or skills. We will use activity-based learning as a method to differential the level of rigor so you can see how to reach disparate students when there is a wide range of abilities in a single classroom. Any teacher who would like to see what a continuous sequence of student-centered learning looks like will benefit from this workshop and be able to use it as a model for designing units with similar goals for other content areas.
This workshop will be held in the Town Mountain room of the Hilton Garden Inn 309 College St. in downtown Asheville, NC.
